What was the furniture in ancient Egypt
” ‘An informative article about what furniture the ancient Egyptians used in everyday life. You will find out that even then people were sleeping on beds with orthopedic effect. Ancient Egyptian style today has become an independent area of interior design. ” ‘
Ancient Egyptian furniture is known to our contemporaries not only due to wall paintings: the custom of leaving things in the tombs for the comfortable afterlife of the deceased gave researchers original samples of things of that time. We know what benches and tables were, mattresses and beds, how the throne of the pharaoh looked and what dishes were made of in the houses of the inhabitants of Egypt.
According to archaeologists, various types of seats became the first interior item – examples of great stools and low benches have survived to our time. Then, ceremonial chairs appeared in the homes of wealthy Egyptians. They were of different shapes, but almost all were made with a back.
As for the tables, at first they were made low, because they were sitting on the ground, and only later did the tables appear, the height which is familiar to the inhabitants of modern cities. The Egyptians used yew, olive and ebony, sycamore, cedar, and tesla, a drill, a saw and an ax were used from tools, and the finished furniture was polished with a pumice and knife.
History has preserved for us many types of ancient Egyptian furniture – caskets, chests, armchairs, cabinets, beds, folding stools with X-shaped legs. The caskets were made in the form of a parallelepiped on four legs with a gable or half-cylinder lid. The legs of chairs and armchairs were often made in the form of animal paws. Special chests and caskets acted as cabinets – they stored and transferred clothes, food, and various dishes.
Wealthy Egyptians used things that can be called real works of art. The rich decoration, carved ornament, soft seats and backs with openwork armrests and inlaid caskets with semiprecious and precious stones differed sharply from furniture in the houses of artisans and villagers. The furniture was painted in bright and pure colors – white, red, green, blue, yellow, and before painting it was carefully polished and covered with putty.
It was the ancient Egyptians who invented to raise the bed above the ground – at least, according to archaeologists. Ancient Egyptian beds were somewhat similar to modern ones with a metal mesh. The wooden frame was mounted on four supports, in the form of reminiscent of the paws of a walking animal. Then ropes were pulled onto the frame – either in the form of a net or continuous weaving, and an elastic and at the same time hard flooring was obtained, no worse than modern orthopedic mattresses. Soft mattresses lay on this basis, they were also used to soften the seats and backs of chairs.
The art of Ancient Egypt greatly influenced later civilizations – the ideas of Egyptian furniture are noticeable in ancient Roman models, as well as in interior items related to the Empire style of France of the 19th century. Now there is a completely independent interior style, based on ancient Egyptian art and furniture, which looks good not only in massive old mansions, but also in urban apartments filled with the latest technology.
