In the Biedermeier style, as in a kind of mirror, the architectural trends of the middle and end of the 19th century were reflected. Eclecticism or, as this period is now called, historicism reigned supreme in all forms of art; stylistic diversity manifested itself especially vividly in architecture. For Biedermeier, eclecticism became the main artistic and stylistic characteristic, which allows us to talk about it as a completely independent style.
In reference books and art encyclopedias, the following definition is given: Biedermeier (Biedermeier; German: Biedermeier) – artistic style, direction in German and Austrian art, (architecture and design). The word Bieder is translated from German as “simple-minded, philistine; thus, Biedermeier is the style of the “simple-minded Mr. Meyer,” a burgher, a small urban man. Continue reading
